Open24 Adventure Race

Sorry you have missed the 2007 Open24 Adventure Race but we will be back in 2008 on the weekend of the 26/27th July, check back in December when we will post more details.

This is in its third year of running, a non-stop experience of adventure over 24hrs - too much adventure was a comment made last year!

So what does it include, well the core of the event will include mountain biking, trekking (or running) and paddling with navigation a key part of the event. Each of the stages will include a special stage or 'trouser filler' - we have had white water paddling, canyoning, swimming, caving, abseiling - the thing is you wont know what these are until the event has started. From the smiles on competitor faces we think we have got it right, so if you want an unforgettable weekend in the Lake District sign up for the Open24.

Open24But but but... the questions often find their way to Open Adventure towers, "Do you think we can manage it?" its a tricky question to answer - the aim of the event is to collect as many points as possible so the fitter and faster competitors will take a longer route than the mortals of the world. We structure the event so that beginners to adventure racing can still have a great time, take some time out for a sleep and still make it back with a reasonable score - the trick is don't get greedy and go chasing points way off the direct route between the transitions. If you have any questions or are unsure about being able to compete in the Open24 give us a call or wing us an email. 90% of competitors in the 2006 made it round the Open24.

This event is for male, female and mixed pairs and will cost £120 per person. The event will not require a support crew. The event is part of the endurance series, competitors who enter the series will be entitled to further discount on the entry fee. Check out the endurance series entry form for further details.

28 / 29 July - Lake District

update [14/07]

Location

Registration is at Outward Bound Eskdale in the Western Lakes. Its a pretty spectacular location to be running the Open24 and we are pretty confident that you will enjoy the views from here if the weather is nice. Click here to see more details on the venue.

Parking and Car sharing

First of all, parking is tight if you turn up and lay claim to half the car park whilst spreading out your kit please don't be surprised to be asked to find somewhere else. We would ask that pairs share vehicles, almost all competitors will be traveling from the M6 (which is a good hour from Eskdale). There are plenty of locations to leave cars soon after leaving the M6.Outward Bound Eskdale

If traveling from the south we would highly recommend you take the Birker fell road over to Eskdale from Ulpha - spectacular views and considerably quicker.

Food and Accommodation

Bed and Breakfast accommodation is still available on the Friday night - £35 per person, please email Lisa if required.

Hot food (I think its Lasagne - to be confirmed) will be available at Outward Bound Eskdale on Friday night for £5 per person. There will also be a buffet meal (inc. vegetarian options) after the finish £4 per person. If you wish to take up either of these options please wing Lisa an email and pay at registration - all food needs to be pre booked.

Showers will also be available after the event in the accommodation with a nominal charge of £3.

Adventure Racing Shop

Joe from Windermere Canoe and Kayak will be at registration and also about over the weekend so if you require any last minute bit of kit, give him a call on 015394 44451 to ensure he brings it along. They now have a website up and running with a copy of the Open24 kit list. www.totaladventureracing.co.uk

Event Support

We are still short of a hand or two helping out at the event, if you have friends or family who are dithering about whether to come up and watch please point them our way. Being energetic is not a requirement, having a big smile is.

Maps

If you are buying paper maps, the two maps of choice are Explorer OL4 Lake District North western area and Explorer OL6 Lake District South western area. If the 1:50 Landranger series is your preference then you will require sheets 89 and 96. Unfortunately the superb Harvey mountain map or the superwalker does not cover all of the area required for this event. Remember on Monday 23rd July, Anquet will be making available mapping for the event at a heavily discounted rate - see the offer at the top of the page.

The kit list has changed recently and it would be wise to have a look at this again and take particular note about our concern over old harnesses and buoyancy aids.

We will update the FAQ pages every 2 or 3 days with questions that have come in.
